Colombia – Japan (2018 World Cup)

Colombia and japan are up against each other this Tuesday at Mordovia Arena, for the 1st round of Group H of the 2018 World Cup. The Colombians arrive here after two goalless draws in their last two preparation matches, and are looking for a good start in the competition. Japan, on the other hand, was able to end a five-game winless streak with a 4-2 victory over Paraguay in their final World Cup warm-up match.

In the last 20 years, Colombia have only participated in the 2014 World Cup, in Brazil, where they had a very good performance, reaching the quarter finals, their best record in the competition so far, but ended up being eliminated by Brazil. Besides this, it is importante to note that they have won five of their last six World Cup matches. Los Cafeteros have played 3 friendly matches since the beginning of the year, they beat France (2-3) and draw against Australia (0-0), both in March, and draw again against Egypt (0-0), this month.

José Pékerman coaches a team with a very strong backbone, starting with Ospina in goal, Sánchez and Yerry Mina at the back, Carlos Sánchez and James Rodríguez in midfield, and Falcao leading the front line. Back in the 2014 World Cup, the Colombians were in the same group as Japan, and won 4-1, something they will try to replicate here.

Probable Lineup: Ospina – Arias, Sánchez, Mina and Mojica – Sánchez and Barrios – Cuadrado, Rodríguez and Uribe – Falcao.

World Cup 2018Japan, on their turn, made their debut in a World Cup in 1998 and have played all the following editions since then, but have only went beyond the group stages once, back in 2010. The Japanese arrive here with five friendly matches played so far this year, starting with a 1-1 draw against Mali and a 1-2 defeat against Ukraine, both in March and, more recently, a 0-2 defeat against Ghana, a 1-0 against Switzerland, and finally a victory against Paraguay (4-2).

It is important to note that Japan has some good players, whose names are well known across Europe, such as defenders Yoshida (Southampton), Gotoku Sakai (Hamburg) and Hiroki Sakai (Marseille), midfielders like Hasebe (Frankfurt) Inui (Betis) and Kagawa (Borussia Dortmund), and forwards like Okazaki (Leicester City) and Muto (Mainz). The Blue Samurai will seek revenge from their defeat in the 2014 World Cup.

Probable Lineup: Kashima – Sakai, Yoshida, Makino and Nagatomo – Hasebe and Yamaguchi – Honda, Kagawa and Inui – Okazaki.

Colombia won 2 of their only 3 direct clashes against Japan. The remaining ended in a tie.

Japan are a team with very fast players, they often seek the goal line and attempt as many crosses as possible, which provides the opportunity for Colombia to counter-attack, making this a very fast and intense match. Still, with more experienced players in these type of competitions, Los Cafeteros holds the favoritism in this match and have what it takes to get the three points.
