Liverpool – Tottenham (Premier League)

The 26th matchday of the Premier League comes with a titans duel, with Liverpool and Tottenham going up against each other at Anfield Road on Sunday afternoon. After two consecutive defeats, one for the FA Cup and the other for the Premier League, Liverpool got back to winning ways in the last round of the competition, winning at Huddersfield’s ground. Tottenham, on their turn, arrive here high on expectations after beating Manchester United 2-0 in the previous round, approaching Champions League spots.

Liverpool are in 3rd place with 50 points, from 14 victories, 8 draws and 3 defeats, with 57 goals scored and 29 goals conceded.  After two rather unexpected defeats, 1-0 away to Swansea City for the Premier League and a 2-3 at home against West Bromwich for the FA Cup, Liverpool returned to winning ways on Tuesday night with a 0-3 away win against Huddersfield. This match against Tottenham will be a test to see if they are really over their minor blip. The Reds have lost only 1 of the last 16 consecutive Premier League games and still have the advantage of playing at home, where they are still unbeaten this season, winning 7 of the 12 games played here with a total of 25 goals scored and 7 granted.

Jurgen Klopp’s side won the last three home games for the Premier League, scoring 11 goals and conceding 4 in the process, and one of those victories was against the mighty Manchester City, by 4-3.  In all of those 12 games, the Reds only failed to score in a single match, in the draw against Manchester United, and have kept clean sheets on 7 occasions. The Reds do tend to impress at home against Spurs, losing just the one of their last 19 meetings with the north London side at Anfield.

In their last 5 official matches, Liverpool has a record of 2 victories, 1 draw and 2 defeats. This sequence of results started with a 0-0 draw away to Chelsea, fort the EFL Cup. This result was followed by a 4-3 victory against Manchester City, a 1-0 defeat against Swansea City, a 2-3 defeat against West Bromwich, for the FA Cup, and in their last match, a 0-3 win against Huddersfield.

Probable Lineup: Karius – Gomez, Matip, Dijk and Robertson – Chamberlain, Henderson and Can – Salah, Firmino and Mané.

premier-leagueTottenham, on their, are in 5th place with 48 points, from 14 victories, 6 draws and 5 defeats, with 49 goals scored and 22 goals conceded. The Spurs arrive here high on confidence after beating Manchester United in the match of the competition, adding their 9th consecutive game without proving the taste of defeat, with two matches of the FA Cup through the middle. With the victory over the Red Devils, Tottenham came closer to the Champions League spots and are now only 2 points behind this Liverpool, and 5 behind 2nd placed Manchester United, which gives extra motivation to Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Although the Lilywhites are getting stronger as visitors, being undefeated in their last 3 Premier League away matches, they only have 2 victories in their last 8 matches in the competition as visitors, losing to Manchester United, Arsenal, Leicester City and Manchester City, and this trip will not be any easier than these others. It is still important to note that the Spurs scored at least 1 goal in each of the last 6 trips and kept clean sheets twice in that time.

In their last 5 official matches, Tottenham has a record of 3 victories and 2 defeats. This sequence of results started with a 3-0 victory over Wimbledon, for the FA Cup. This result was followed by a 4-0 victory against Everton, a 1-1 draw away to Southampton, a 1-1 draw away to Newport County, for the FA Cup, and in their last match, a 2-0 victory over Manchester United.

Probable Lineup: Lloris – Aurier, Sánchez, Vertonghen and Davies – Dier and Dembélé – Heung-Min, Alli and Eriksen – Kane.

Liverpool won 4 of their last 8 direct confrontations, tying 3 and losing the remaining one.

This is a game that tends to be balanced, with both teams going through a good moment. Liverpool have been very strong at home this season and have scored 11 goals in the last 3 league games at Anfield. Tottenham have been doing well, but besides the fact that they usually struggle to make a difference at Anfield Road, they also have a FA Cup replay to contend with in midweek as the fixtures begin to pile up and could come unstuck against Liverpool on Sunday.
