Villarreal – Espanyol (La Liga)

After a comfortable away win against Alavés, Villarreal will now host Espanyol, on Thursday, at the Estadio de la Cerámica, in Villarreal, in a match for the 5th round of La Liga. The home side did not had the expected start in the Spanish league, slipping in the first two rounds, but it seems that they have finally found their balance and managed to maintain a good form ever since. Espanyol, on their turn, managed to put an end to their bad moment that they had been through since the start of the season, wining their first game of the season.

Villarreal occupy the 8th place in the league table with 6 points, result of 2 victories and 2 defeats, with 6 goals scored and 5 goals conceded. With defeats at the hands of Levante and Real Sociedad, in the first two rounds of the league, Villarreal had an undesirable start to the season. However, it seems they have found their balance on Matchday 3 and won the remaining challenges, against Real Betis and Alavés.

Midway through last week, the Yellow Submarine also got an important triumph, beating Astana by 3-1 in the opening match of Group A of the Europa League. Villarreal remain an aggressive team and always fights until the end and are strong in protecting the lead, but are weak in defending set pieces. The Yellow Submarine has improved their offensive capacity in the last rounds, having scored 3 goals in each of their last 3 games, and are strong in creating chances through individual skills, by using through balls or in long shot opportunities.

In their last 5 official games, Villarreal have a record of 3 wins and 2 losses. This sequence of results started with a 1-0 defeat against Levante. This result was followed by a 3-0 defeat against Real Sociedad, a 3-1 win over Real Betis, a 3-1 win against Astana, for the Europa League, and in their last round, a 0-3 win against Alavés. Sergio Asenjo, Bruno Soriano and Andrés Fernández are all out due to injury.

Probable Lineup: Barbosa – Gaspar, González, Ruiz and Rukavina – Fornals, Trigueros, Rodri and Castillejo – Bacca and Bakambu.

laligaEspanyol, on their turn, occupy the 16th place in the league table with 4 points, result of 1 victory, 1 draw and 2 defeats, with 3 goals scored and 8 goals conceded. The Catalans also failed to start the season in the way they wanted, failing to win their first 3 matches in the Spanish league, drawing against Sevilla in the first round and losing the other two against Leganés and Barcelona. Still, Espanyol managed to clinch their first victory of the season in the last round, wining by 2-1 against Celta de Vigo, showing a good performance during the first half, where they scored the two goals.

The Budgerigars are showing a great defensive disorganization, having difficulties in aerial duels, defending set pieces and defending against through ball attacks. Offensively, the Catalans are showing difficulties in keeping possession of the ball and in finishing scoring chances, creating most of their goal situations through individual skill.

In their only 4 official matches, Espanyol has a record of 1 win, 1 draw and 2 defeats. This sequence of results started with a 1-1 draw against Sevilla. This result was followed by a 0-1 defeat against Leganés, a 5-0 defeat against Barcelona, and in their last round, a 2-1 win against Celta de Vigo. Óscar Duarte and Javi López are out, both injured.

Probable Lineup: Pau López – Sánchez, Hermoso, López and Martín – Baptistao, Darder, Fuego and Piatti – Moreno and García.

Villarreal won 4 of their last 8 direct clashes, drawing 3 and losing the remaining one.
