Juventus – AS Monaco (Champions League)

With one foot in the door of the Champions League final, after a huge performance in France, Juventus now host, this tuesday night at Juventus Stadium, a decided AS Monaco who wants to overturn the 0-2 in the first leg. Juve left France, in the first leg, with another clean sheet, preventing one of Europe’s most offensive teams from scoring goals. AS Monaco, on their turn, arrive here with nothing to loose, and will enter in this game with eyes on the opposition goal, needing to net at least two goals without conceding none if they want to keep dreaming with a Champions League final.

Juventus have been achieving an exemplary course this season in the Champions League, starting their course by qualifying as Group H leaders, ahead of Sevilla, and beating FC Porto and the mighty Barcelona in the previous qualifiers. In the first leg of these semi-finals, Juve prevented, once again, one of the most Europe’s goalscoring teams to get on the scoresheet, having done the same thing with Barcelona in the previous qualifier, and the two goals scored at Stade Louis II has almost secured their presence in the competition’s final. Besides that, La Vecchia Signora doesn’t lose at home ground in the Champions League since Abril 10 of 2013, and this season they have conceded only 1 goal in all their 5 games in the competition, scoring 7 in the process. For their opponent to have any chance of progression to the final, Juve would have to concede two goals without scoring any in the progress, and the last time they have conceded two goals at home, in all of their official competitions, was against Bayern Munich in February 23, 15 months ago.

Coach Massimiliano Allegri had the luxury of resting most of their team at the weekend and the italian coach can recall on nearly all of his best players here. This italian team have, without a doubt, one of the most organized defensive sectors in all Europe and it is expected that they can keep the french side away from their goal once again. Offensively, Juve always attacks in a very organized way, in order to reduce the chance of the other team counter-attack. They are very strong in set-pieces, shooting from direct free kicks, attacking down the wings, finishing scoring chances and in creating chances through individual skill, with very talented players like Dybala, Cuadrado, Mandzukic, among others, that can make the difference at any moment.

In their last 5 official games, Juventus won 2 games and draw the other 3. This sequence of results started with a 0-0 away draw against Barcelona, for the Champions League. This result was followed by a 4-0 home win against Genoa, 2-2 away draw against Atalanta, 0-2 away win over AS Monaco, for the Champions League, and in their last clash, a 1-1 home draw against Torino. Pjaca is out due to injury.

Probable Lineup: Buffon – Alves, Bonucci, Chiellini and Sandro – Pjanic and Khedira – Cuadrado, Dybala and Mandzukic – Higuaín.

champions leagueAS Monaco, on their turn, also enjoyed a good start of this european campaign, qualifying as Group E leader, ahead of Bayer Leverkusen, and beating Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund in the following qualifiers, and always showing a huge offensive quality. However, in the first leg, monegasques were unable to overcome a perfect defensive wall and, consequently, unable to score a single goal. Away from their domains, Leonardo Jardim’s men have more difficulty in getting positive results than playing at home, having only won 2 of their last 5, losing 2, and scored 9 goals while conceded 12 in the process. Despite their fantastic offensive capacity, Monaco are not a good team when it comes to the defensive process and that was reflected in the first leg, also because the monegasques have always faced strong offensive teams but all of them had defensive fragilities, while Juventus is the first team with a great defensive organization crossing their path.

In disadvantage in this second leg, Leonardo Jardim’s men now have little to lose and they will enter in this game with full strength, with an offensive posture since the first whistle and trying to equalize the tie. Yet, scoring two goals against Juve, in Italy, is something that doesn’t happen with regularity, and it will also be a lot difficult for them to not concede any goal in the process. The monegasques have a fantastic offensive quality, able to create scoring chances by attacking down the wings, with long shots, attacking set pieces and through individual skill, having very fast and talented players like Bernardo Silva, Falcao, Mbappé, among others, all of them capable of making the difference at any moment. However, adopting an offensive posture here will enable Juventus to execute fast counterattacks and taking advantage of the space they left behind their backs.

In their last 5 official games, AS Monaco won 3 games and lost the remaining 2. This sequence of results started with a 1-2 away victory against Lyon. This result was followed by 5-0 away defeat at the hands of PSG, for the Coupe de France, a 3-1 home win against Toulouse, 0-2 home defeat against Juventus, for the Champions League, and in their last clash, a 0-3 away victory over Nancy. Pjaca, injured, is out for this game, while Rugani remains a doubt.

Probable Lineup: Subasic – Dirar, Jemerson, Glik and Sidibe – Bernardo Silva, Fabinho, Bakayoko and Lemar – Mbappé and Falcao.

Juventus won 2 of their last 3 direct confronts disputed since the beginning of the millennium, drawing the other one.

All in all, this should be a game with Monaco entering with full strength, focussed on the attacking process, and with Juventus to build, once again, their impressive defensive wall and taking advantage of the counterattacks to try to score. Although this shouldn’t be a game with many goals, Juve should be the one to win here.
