Liverpool – Burnley (Premier League)

After a disappointing draw against Sevilla in the Champions League, Liverpool are now up against Burnley, this Saturday, at Anfield, for the 5ª round of the Premier League. Things are getting ugly for Jurgen Klopp’s side, who after being devastated at the hands of Manchester City were unable of getting a better result than a draw by 2-2 at home against Sevilla in mid-week. Burnley, on their turn, are enjoying a good start of the season, having only tasted defeat once this season and are comfortable in the league table.

Liverpool are in 8th place in the league table with 7 points, result of 2 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat, with 8 goals scored and 8 goals conceded. After winning twice in the Premier League, beating Crystal Palace and Arsenal, Liverpool ended up being trashed in the previous round at the hands of Manchester City, losing by 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium. To make things worse, the Reds were unable to get better than a 2-2 draw at home against Sevilla, in the first round of Group E of the Champions League, with Jurgen Klopp’s side showing huge defensive gaps. Liverpool’s offensive qualities are unquestionable, they can create goalscoring opportunities with ease, being a team that creates long shot opportunities, are fast in counter-attack, create chances through individual skill since they have some very talented players, and have a effectiveness at finishing scoring chances.

However, the defensive part is the german coach’s biggest headache, with the team conceding goals almost every game, having difficulties in defending against attacks down the wings, against through balls attacks and against skillful players. After these somewhat disappointing results, Jurgen Klopp will demand an immediate response from his players and a home victory is mandatory. In addition, the Reds haven’t tasted defeat this season at Anfield in the 4 matches played here, where they scored 11 goals and conceded 4 in the process.

In their last 5 official games, Liverpool have a record of 3 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. This sequence of results began with a 1-0 victory against Crystal Palace. This result was followed by a 4-2 win against Hoffenheim, for the Champions League, a 4-0 win against Arsenal, a 5-0 defeat against Manchester City, and in their last round, a 2-2 draw against Sevilla, for the Champions League. Lallana, Bogdan, Clyne and Danny Ings are out due to injuries, while Sadio Mané is also out through suspension.

Probable Lineup: Mignolet – Alexander-Arnold, Lovren, Matip and Robertson – Henderson, Can and Chamberlain – Salah, Firmino and Coutinho.

premier-leagueBurnley, on their turn, are in 7th place in the league table with 7 points, result of 2 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat, with 5 goals scored and 4 goals conceded. Burnley are having a good start of the campaign and began with an unexpected win at Stamford Bridge, against Chelsea in the first round, eventually losing their second meeting at home against West Bromwich ground, but have always been able to avoid defeat ever since. The Clarets have also managed to qualify for the 3rd round of EFL Cup, by winning in the 2nd round against Blackburn Rovers.

This team lead by Sean Dyche have shown some defensive difficulties, especially in defending set pieces, in defending against skillful players and in stopping opponents from creating scoring chances. Offensively, the Clarets show quality in offensive set pieces and in creating chances through individual skill, being also a powerful side in aerial duels which leads them to attempt crosses often.

In their 5 official games, Burnley has a record of 3 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. This sequence of results started with a 2-3 victory against Chelsea. This result was followed by a 0-1 defeat against West Bromwich, a 0-2 win against Blackburn Rovers, for the EFL Cup, a 1-1 draw against Tottenham, and in their last round, a 1-0 win against Crystal Palace. Marney and Nahki Wells are both out due to injury.

Probable Lineup: Pope – Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee and Ward – Cork, Defour, Gudmundsson and Brady – Walters and Wood.

Liverpool has won 5 of their last 6 direct clashes, losing the remaining one.

Liverpool are favorites to win and they really have to, or things can start to get complicated for the sides of the German coach. Still, this will not be an easy game, with the Reds being tired from the match against Sevilla receiving here a fresh Burnley looking for, at least, one point here. Expect a home win but with some difficulties for the Reds.
