Real Madrid – Sevilla (La Liga)

After securing their presence in the Champions League final in midweek, Real Madrid returns to Santiago Bernabéu where they will host Sevilla, this Sunday, for the 37th round of La Liga. This Wednesday night, the Merengues lost 2-1 at Atlético Madrid’s home, but this defeat wasn’t enough to deny them the access to another Champions League final, their 2nd consecutive final. Sevilla, on their turn, haven’t won any of their last two consecutive games and has lost too many ground in the race for 3rd spot in the league table, with Atlético Madrid now 5 points ahead of them.

Real Madrid are 2nd placed in the La Liga table with the same 84 points than Barcelona, result of 26 victories, 6 draws and 3 defeats, with 96 goals scored and 39 goals conceded. This has been an excellent season for Real Madrid, who spent most part of the season at the top of the table, even when they had two games behind schedule in relation to Barcelona. However, after the defeat in El Clássico, the Merengues stayed with the same points than Barcelona, who has a superior goal difference, obliging Real Madrid to win all of their last league matches in order to be crowned champions.

It is natural that Los Blancos might arrive here a little tired after such a tough game agains neighbors Atlético Madrid on Wednesday night, what might lead Zidane to make a few changes. Their only home defeat this season was at the hands of Barcelona, and the Merengues are a really strong team when they play in front of their supporters. In general, this is a team with good defensive organization and very powerful in the offensive process, being very dangerous in attacking down the wings, with very talented full backs like Marcelo, who likes to go up front and take a lot of crosses, mainly directed to Cristiano Ronaldo, and are also a strong team in set pieces and in creating chances through individual skills. Note for Isco, who is in a fantastic form and is very important in transporting the ball up front. These last two league games are like two finals for Real Madrid, with the Merengues might being able to add up two titles this season, the title of spanish champion and european champion for second time in a row.

In their last 5 official games, Real Madrid has won 4 and lost 1. This sequence of results started with a 2-6 victory at Deportivo’s home. This result was followed by a 2-1 home victory over Valencia, a 3-0 home victory against Atlético Madrid, for the Champions League, a 0-4 victory at Granada’s home, and in their last clash, a 2-1 defeat at Atlético Madrid’s home. Gareth Bale and Carvajal are both out due to injury.

Probable Lineup: Navas – Nacho, Varane, Ramos and Marcelo – Casemiro, Kroos and Modric – Isco – Benzema and Ronaldo.

laligaSevilla, on their turn, are 4th placed in the La Liga table with 69 points, result of 20 victories, 9 draws and 7 defeats, with 63 goals scored and 45 goals conceded. Having spending a lot of time chasing Barcelona and Real Madrid in the title race, Sevilla started to lose his form bit by bit, and ended up being overtaken by Atlético Madrid, what left them in this 4th spot which grants access to the Champions League play-off.

With a 6 points advantage over 5th Villarreal, it is unlikely that the Sevillistas put this 4th spot at risk, with a draw here or in the next round being enough to secure this 4th position. However, Jorge Sampaoli’s men have clearly suffered a break in their form and their last results aren’t pleasant, especially away from home, where they haven’t won any of their last 5, losing 3 and drawing 2, with only 4 goals scored and 11 conceded. Sevilla are a good offensive team, but they surely leave too many defensive loopholes for their opponents to exploit, something that Real Madrid will gladly do.

In their last 5 official games, Sevilla won 2, draw 2 and lost the other 1. This sequence of results started with a 0-0 draw at Valencia’s ground. This result was followed by a 2-0 home victory over Granada, a 3-0 home victory over Celta de Vigo, a 4-2 defeat at Málaga’s home, and in their last clash, a 1-1 home draw against Real Sociedad. Sarabia, suspended, is out for this tie.

Probable Lineup: Rico – Rami, Pareja and Lenglet – Mariano, N’Zonzi, Nasri and Escudero – Correa, Yedder and Vitolo.

Real Madrid has won 5 of their last 8 direct clashes, drawing 1 and losing the other 2.
