Sweden – England (2018 World Cup)

The Cosmos Arena hosts and exciting challenge between Sweden and England, who will discuss a place in the 2018 World Cup semi-finals on Saturday. Sweden arrive here after eliminating Switzerland by 1-0, keeping their third clean sheet in four matches played in the competition so far. England, on their turn, are confident and motivated after beating Colombia, having broken their curse by qualifying through a penalty shoot-out for the first time in a World Cup.

Sweden qualified as Group F leaders, they have won against Mexico and South Korea, but lost against Germany, finishing the group stage with 5 goals scored and 2 conceded. In the last 16, the Swedes eliminated Switzerland in a rather poor match where they were tactically very good, but showed a huge lack of effectiveness in finishing scoring chances. However, their adopt a defensive style of play, and that is why they have kept three clean sheets in four matches in this World Cup, and this is the first time in 24 years that Sweden play a World Cup quarter-final.

Sebastian Larsson will return to the starting XI after missing their 1-0 win over Switzerland through suspension, but now Sweden have lost Mikael Lustig to a one-match ban. Albin Ekdal is a doubt with a foot injury, but their is an expectation he will be okay to start. Jimmy Durmaz will also require a late fitness test due to a hip problem.

Probable Lineup: Olsen – Krafth, Lindelof, Granqvist and Augustinsson – Larsson, Ekdal, Forsberg and Claesson – Berg and Toivonen.

World Cup 2018England, on their turn, qualified as Group G runners-up, they have won against Panama and Tunisia, but lost against Belgium, with a record of 8 goals scored and 3 goals conceded. The Three Lions are confident after breaking some kind of a course, qualifying for the time through a penalty shoot-out. However, this qualification might have a down side, since the players will be more tired than their opponents here, and rest will be key for England after they required penalties to beat Colombia. Against Sweden, a national team that rarely seeks possession, the Three Lions will be in control of the game, so will look to attack through down the wings and will attempt crosses often, looking for captain Harry Kane, the top scorer of this competition with 6 goals scored.

However, they will have to be careful no to get caught in the Swedes counter-attacks. On Tuesday night, Gareth Southgate revealed after the match that several players were dealing with injuries, Jamie Vardy required an injection after extra-time that prevented him from taking a penalty and should be out for this match, while Ashley Young, Dele Alli and Kyle Walker also came off with knocks, and are all doubts here. Walker, Henderson, Lingard and Loftus-Cheek are all one booking away from missing the semi-finals.

Probable Lineup: Pickford – Walker, Stones e Maguire – Henderson, Loftus-Cheek, Lingard, Rose e Trippier – Kane e Sterling.

Sweden won 2 of their last 7 direct clashes against England, drawing 3 and losing the remaining 2.

Expect a game controlled by England, who will have more possession and more scoring chances, while Sweden will look to counter-attack in order to damage Gareth Southgate’s side. England are the only team left in the competition yet to keep a clean sheet at the 2018 World Cup and are favorites to qualify to the next stage, but they might not make it there with a clean sheet.
